Whether you’d like a different strap on your watch or the old strap has worn out and needs to be replaced, it’s important to know which types of straps will be a good match for Original Grain watches.
While this is a common question, and a great one, the answer is not so straight forward. First of all, not everybody will be fashion-conscious enough to put such thought into choosing a watch strap. But for those of use who find this type of thing important, there are some rules you can follow to make sure you’re staying inside the lines.
However, to further expand the grey area of matching the “correct” watch strap with your Original Grain watch, this is something that’s highly subjective. Also, sometimes a black strap will look excellent and compliment a black watch, while other times the black/brown combination won’t look right and will seem very mismatched. It depends on many factors.
Original Grain watches have straps that will compliment the watch itself, so many people don’t even consider changing the strap. But for those of us with particular tastes or somebody who has worn out the old strap and still wants to continue wearing their watch, we need to know how to pick the right one.
The most important thing is that the color of the strap isn’t completely different that the colors on the watch itself. For example, if the watch face uses the colors black, red and white, then you could probably get away with using any three of those colors for the watch strap. In general, the colors that dominate the largest percentage of the watch face will be the best color for the strap, but sometimes matching the strap with an accent color can also look great. It partly depends on the watch, so hold different straps up to your watch and see what works best.
Another consideration is the material(s) that the base of the watch is made of. If the watch is shiny metal or chrome, then some people would say that a dull leather strap is going to be a terrible match and suggest you use a metal strap. On the other side of the coin, if your watch is largely made up of wood, as is the case with many Original Grain watches, a leather strap might be a perfectly fine choice. Again, this decision largely comes down to your personal taste and style.
If you’re wearing an athletic style watch, especially while you’re actually exercising, then a nylon strap focused on comfort and performance, rather than style, will be perfectly appropriate. However, if you’re wearing an upscale watch, or something that’s simply more formal than a watch for timing your sprints at the gym, going with a nylon strap will look cheap and out-of-place.
While fashion is a highly subjective area, most people will have no problem finding a strap that makes a good match for their Original Grain watch. A general tip would be to purchase the strap at a physical store, rather than online, simply because you have the benefit of actually holding different straps up to the watch you’re matching it to. Many items can be purchased online without worrying about the finer details, but when you’re trying to match the appearance of one thing to another, looking and comparing in-store is always the best way to avoid disappointment.
